Being admitted to Hospital?
Due to patient confidentiality laws, hospitals no longer notify parishes when a Catholic is admitted. IT IS ESSENTIAL that you or a family member directly inform the parish priest or office about a scheduled or emergency hospital admission. Before you or a loved one is being admitted to hospital here are a few considerations to help with pastoral care:
Before admission for a planned stay, Notify the Parish by speaking to the Priest or the office with the hospital, ward and date of admission.
Request the Sacrament: You can request the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick before you go into hospital, which can be done after Mass, at home or in Church.
During Admission: Declare your faith to the hospital by informing the staff you are a Catholic and ask for it to be placed in your personal file.
Request a Chaplin: Ask a nurse/staff member to notify the Chaplaincy service that you are there.
Emergency Admissions: In an emergency, ask the ward to contact the on-call Catholic Priest via the hospital switchboard.
Visits are not automatic even if you state you’re a Catholic so you must request a visit. Only you or your family can notify the Parish of your hospitalisation.
Homebound Care: If you are returning home and need Holy Communion brought to you, contact the office upon discharge.
